First GUTSY Character Ambassador Award presented to Sarah A. De Freitas formerly of Stella Maris Primary School.

Sarah A. De Freitas returned to Stella Maris Primary School this month in a different uniform.
She is now a Form 1 student at Queen’s College, after scoring 486.09 on the 2025 National Grade Six Assessment and earning a historic tie for ninth nationally. Those numbers explain the academic achievement. They do not explain the whole honor.
During our recent visit to Guyana, we presented Sarah with one of the first two GUTSY Character Ambassador Awards, the most prestigious student honor in our program.
Since 2019, We Are GUTSY, Inc. has worked pro bono alongside educators in seven primary schools across Guyana. Through the CHARACTER COUNTS!® framework and the Six Pillars of Character®, students learn to turn trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship into daily choices.
Sarah spent more than three years in the GUTSY program at Stella Maris. She was selected because she has demonstrated exemplary character, outstanding academic achievement and what it means to be a role model in her school community.
She also brings that discipline to music, balancing her studies with violin and piano.
The award gives Sarah something to do, not only something to hold. As a GUTSY Character Ambassador, she will help steward the mission in Guyana and carry these values forward for the students coming behind her.
Sarah, we are proud of what you have accomplished and of the character with which you accomplished it!
