Character Skills workshops resume for schools in the GUTSY program.

Educators at St. Margaret’s Primary, Malgre Tout Primary, and Mashabo Primary, recently participated in a Character Skills training workshop hosted by We Are GUTSY, Inc. (GUTSY) a USA based Not for Profit Organization that focusses on character development training and classroom integration for teachers and caregivers in Guyana.

The GUTSY Organisation has assisted Guyana’s teachers to recognise, train and enforce positive student behavior since 2019. The workshop marks the first time training is being conducted during school hours, a move that is welcomed by Guyana’s educators. The decision to change workshop hours came after a team from GUTSY visited the schools in October 2024 to assess its impact, and the team recognised the challenges of engaging with educators after school hours. Training is arranged with School Principals and Head Teachers and coincides with the schools’ mandatory monthly Staff Development sessions at which teachers are expected to attend.

Approximately 40 teachers and Principals from the 3 schools were present at the March 6 Workshop.

The workshop will be repeated on March 26 for the other 5 schools involved in the GUTSY program, Stella Maris Primary, Jos’El Education Institute, Providence Primary, Stewartville Primary and Paramakatoi Primary. GUTSY will conduct monthly workshops when schools are in session.

We Are GUTSY, Inc. comprises overseas based volunteers from Guyana, Jamaica and the USA. The Organization is a member of the CHARACTER COUNTS Coalition an alliance of organisations committed to spreading character education using the CHARACTER COUNTS! framework and teaching the SIX PILLARS of Character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, Citizenship.
