A boost for banners: Flavors of the Caribbean 2023
In addition to the live entertainment, the Caribbean-inspired cuisine, and the anticipation of winning the 40 attractive prizes up for grabs, this year’s focus at our annual fundraiser, FLAVORS OF THE CARIBBEAN, was funds for visual aids for students in Guyana. Each year, the event is used to raise money for a meaningful contribution to the schools’ educators to complement GUTSY’s coaching.
When the call was made during the evening’s program for donations to purchase Character Pillar Banners, the audience was generous in their giving. Many guests willingly offered $180 for banners representing the Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. Others donated half a set and whatever they could, and by the end of the call GUTSY received over $5000 in guest contributions.
The colorful 5ft x 2ft vinyl banners have been ordered and will be shipped to Guyana early in the new school year. They will be mounted in the schools to remind the students of the six core values that define good character. Students who are part of GUTSY’s program and their peers are taught to mirror the values in their schools and communities.
